Over the last few weeks, there has been an increase in the number of reported thefts from fuel tanks in Northumberland.

To tackle the problem, police are offering crime prevention advice to the local residents.

Owners of fuel tanks are being encouraged advice over the phone and officers are carrying out home visits to provide security measures.

The local community are also urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

“Due to the sustained high price of fuel and heating oil we have started to see the number of fuel thefts rise. A few pounds spent on the security of your storage tank now could save you hundreds replacing stolen fuel;” stressed a Northumbria Police spokesman.
